Who or what is the Word?

It is simply the word of God

The below passage is another widely misinterpreted scripture, which the Trinitarian doctrine bases it's teachings.  These teachings declare that Jesus is God because Jesus is the Word and The Word is God.  However if we look closely at this full passage and a number of other verses from the psalms below, we should be able to recognize what really is being said by the context in this first passage of John - regardless of any possible minor errors in translation.

John 1:1-23
1    In the beginning
[before the creation] was the Word [God], and the [revealed] Word was with God [in God's foreknowledge], and the Word was God [God and his word are one].
2    The same
[the revealed word in God's foreknowledge] was in the beginning with God.
3    All things were made
[created and formed] by him [God]; and without him [God] was not any thing made that was made.
4    In him
[God] was life [Gods spirit upon men]; and the life was the light [the revealed word in written or spoken form] of men.
5    And the light
[God and his word revealed] shineth in darkness [the darkness of the world]; and the darkness comprehended it not [the world did not understand God, or his word].
6    There was a man sent from God, whose name was John
[John the baptist].
7    The same
[John] came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light [God word revealed in the flesh by Jesus Christ, the messiah], that all men through him [Jesus Christ] might believe.
8    He
[John] was not that Light [Jesus Christ], but was sent to bear witness of that Light [Jesus Christ].
9    That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10    He
[God] was in the world [the revealed word in written or spoken form], and the world was made by him [God], and the world knew him [God] not.
11    He
[God] came unto his own [the Jews (the chosen ones)], and his own received him not.
12    But as many
[of the Jews] as received him [God], to them gave he power [the right] to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on [unto] his name [the name of his son Jesus Christ - who was to be the revealed word in the flesh]:
13    Which
[who] were [was] born [conceived], not of blood [not by the bloodline of mankind] , nor of the will of the flesh [not by mans desire - sexual intercourse], nor of the will of man [not the the decision of men], but of God [but by Gods decision].
14    And the Word
[the revealed word Christ] was made flesh [born of a woman], and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15    John bare witness of him
[Jesus], and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me [through the words of the prophets who spoke before John came, of the messiah who was to come].
16    And of his fullness have all we received
[by the miracles he performed before the people], and grace for grace.
17    For the law
[the ten commandments] was given by Moses, but grace [unmerited favor] and truth came by Jesus Christ [Christ was (and still is); the way, the truth, and the life].
18    No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father
[the Son was in God's heart (foreknowledge) before the foundation of creation], he [the Son] hath declared [made known] him [God].
19    And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
20    And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
21    And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
22    Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23    He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

These above verses from the psalms should basically sum up the nature of the word or Word.  It is Gods word, which was first in his foreknowledge from before the creation; then as it was given to the prophets of old time as a standard for the people to live by; and finally as it was given through Jesus Christ Gods only begotten son for reconciling men to God.  Trinitarian teachings seem mostly to prevail in the new testament and not so much in the old testament.  In these verses the word refers to the commandments given by god to the people, in order that they may live in the manner of righteousness - which is right believing.   In the new testament the word or Word is referred to as; the scriptures; as Christ the declarer of God; and as God's own word of truth, which was from the very beginning.
